sounds good to me (even though I'll probably never get around to
even getting a copy of your program, its always nice to see
what others have done).

Hi, Chris (and the whole rest of the NA continent :-)).
I think that the server is either misleading you, or you are
misunderstanding what it is saying. (No flames intended, and I
am not intending to cast aspersions on Chris, the callsign
server, the USA, the FCC, the President, or even myself...
there, is that enough disclaimer? :-))
The only information which is in the FCC database (concerning
dates, anyway) is 'process date', 'effective date', and
'expiration date' (oh, yes, there is also birthday, for a total
of 4 date fields).
'process date' appears to be when the FCC processes a change to
your license (new license, upgrade, change of address, etc) Note
that this is NOT grant date.
'effective date' needs no explanation (I hope!).
'expiration date' - also should need no explanation.
So when you see 'process date' (or whatever the callsign server
is calling it), its not 'license grant date', its simply the date
that the FCC last fiddled with your license (for any reason).
Hope this helps anybody who may have been confused, Chris included. :^)

I doubt if you would have any difficulty with copyright licensing since
verifiable code would encourage purchase of the printed material. Heck, you
could probably get someone like the Wall Street Journal to pay for the station.

"Instant Track", version 1.00, by Franklin Antonio N6NKF is now
available through the AMSAT office. I have it, and it's just
*wonderful*. Steve Roberts' review in 73 was right on the mark.
Perhaps the person who is happiest to see Instant Track is Bob McGwier,
N4HY, author of Quiktrak (AMSAT's standard tracking program until now).
Far from being miffed at having been outdone, Bob has expressed
considerable delight that from now on it'll be Franklin, not him, who
will get all the letters, email and phone calls at all hours of the day
and night asking questions about satellite tracking software! Being in
the volunteer-software-for-amateur-radio "business" myself, I know *exactly*
how he feels...

The Columbian gov't. apparently takes a real dim view of people shipping
Nintendo games in their suitcases on airplanes. They took one such
suitcase, and blew it up. They thought the Nintendo game was a bomb. I
think this is good grounds for sueing the gov't. I am all in favour of
increased security, but increased stupidity is another matter.

I've been using a homebrew discone for about a month now and love it.
The antenna is made out of 1/2 inch 'hardware cloth'. This makes it
very hard to see and has little wind load. Total cost of the antenna is
something less than $10. I put it together and had it mounted in an
afternoon.
The lower design frequency was 140Mhz. The impedence was for the most
part flat between 144 and 1Ghz, with several cusps near the lower limit.
If you intend to use this antenna beyond 1GHz, feedthrough leakage comes
into play so you might want to use finer material.
It sure beats the $60-$80 price tag.

>Governments have the unlimited right, which they have exercised in the past
I'm not sure how to reply to this statement without becoming inflamatory,
lets just go with: The above opinion depends a whole bunch upon your
philosophy of politics, governments, where rights come from in the first
place (which is actually a religious issue (oops, here come the flames!)),
and other philosophical/religious/political presuppositions you may have.
I do not believe that the government has unlimited rights. The above
statement would indicate that Ed does (but then, he may not). However,
this is not a rec.ham-radio topic, its a talk.politics.misc (or maybe even
more appropriate - alt.flame :-) ) topic. so lets move it there!
This is not intended to be a flame, so I hope it did not come off that
way!
Followups directed to talk.politics.misc - please move the discussion there
or to whatever newsgroup it best fits in (alt.flame comes to mind :-)).

Here's a timely piece from the Wall Street Journal:
Wednesday, November 29, 1989
NO PRIVACY -- "...Since the early 1980s, the courts have ruled in
at least a half-dozen cases that private citizens talking on
cordless phones don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy and
therefore aren't covered by the Fourth Amendment. ... Both the
courts and Congress have reasoned that radio technology used in
cordless phones makes the calls easy to intercept, whether
inadvertently or not. So, legal protections would be difficult to
enforce. ... Lawyers say the courts haven't yet directly
considered the rights of the person on the other end of a
cordless telephone conversation ... but judges have indicated that
if someone using a conventional phone knows the other party to the
call is using a cordless phone, neither end of the discussion will
be protected."

There is also a wefax program for the Color Computer 1 and 2 (it might also
run on the 3, I'm not sure) that requires NO external hardware to demodulate
the signal! It uses the cassette port on the back of the computer. Connect
the audio input to the radio (the Rat Shack's cassette cable is great for this,
but you can make your own with connectors and a 5 pin DIN connector). I have
a friend who has received many faxes with it, and it works GREAT! It requires
a disk drive, however. I believe its public domain. If you want, I can get
more info if you want.
Don't forget, too, that the PK-232 also has fax built into it. I have heard
of a few problems with it, but nothing major.
Hope this helps. 73's!

Since I asked for info about using MININEC, I have received a number
of enquiries regarding where the program can be obtained. Clealy
these people are still residing in the dark ages of program sharing!
(Just to get in the spirit of the normal response in this group! ;-)
If you have Internet FTP access, just connect as ANONYMOUS (password
GUEST) to WSMR-SIMTEL20.ARMY.MIL (IP address 26.2.0.74) and download
PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.IDX to obtain a list of hundreds of MSDOS
programs, some dozens being in the PD1:<MSDOS.HAMRADIO> subdirectory,
including MININEC3.ARC . (Kok, note that this is a correction).
SIMIBM.IDX is about 360K bytes. An ARCed version is available as
SIMIBM.ARC.
Thank W8SDZ for maintaining these files.
